Biblical Counseling Center

Shepherd’s Answer

What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical Counseling, sometimes known as Pastoral Counseling or Soul Care, has as its center the Lord Jesus Christ. We prefer to think of it as Focused Discipleship or Wise Friendship.

  • It includes listening, teaching, encouraging, preparing, comforting, warning, and admonishing.
  • It has as its purpose the goal of glorifying God through helping the disciple to understand scripture and apply it to their life. As the disciple grows in a personal, loving, grace oriented relationship with Jesus Christ, God is glorified.
  • It is Scripture based and seeks to frame issues according to God’s Word, and apply it to one’s words and actions. The power to grow is found in learning to trust and obey God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • It acknowledges the need for medicine in addressing biological problems, while acknowledging the Spiritual, Mental, and Emotional issues are best resolved by turning to the One who has given us everything we need for life and godliness.
  • It should result in ongoing transformation that reflects God’s grace and glory as the disciple grows in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18).

How is Biblical Counseling different?

Biblical Counseling provides answers given by the wisdom, commands, and instruction that flow from God’s revealed will as given to us through the Bible. Secular Counseling has its source in the thoughts of man. The goal of Soul Care is to “proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ. And for this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me” (Col 1:28-29 NAS).
…and to equip “the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4:12-13).
